The New Zealand Mint is the self-proclaimed "Minters of the South Pacific," and they have certainly lived up to that title. The Mint has struck the beautiful and meaningful Endangered Species series of silver coins for the island country of Niue, previously featuring the Bengal Tiger and the Black Rhinoceros. The newest installment in the series is this 2015 Niue $2 Mountain Gorilla Endangered Species 1 oz Proof Silver coin, with a limited mintage of just 2,000! Each of these .999 fine silver features a proof finish, with reflective fields that contrast with frosted relief devices, and contain a total of 1 troy ounce of pure silver. As legal tender, they have a designated face value of 2 Dollars.
The reverse design shows the imposing Mountain Gorilla, a species native to the eastern part of Africa. The gorilla is shown standing against the shoreline of a body of water in a typical pose, its fist in the ground as it stands on all fours. A jungle scene is visible in the backdrop, with lush, exotic-looking flora. The legend "MOUNTAIN GORILLA" is found inscribed across the top rim, while the design is brought together by the beautifully detailed rippled reflection of the gorilla in the water below. "1 oz 999 FINE SILVER" is inscribed in much smaller text along the bottom rim.
The obverse shows HRM Queen Elizabeth II facing right, in her royal tiara. "ELIZABETH II" is inscribed against the rim to the left, followed by the issuing nation "NIUE" at the top rim, and the denomination "TWO DOLLARS" along the rim to the right. At the bottom rim, below the truncation, the year-date "2015" appears. The coin's edge is reeded. Included is a display box from the New Zealand Mint that is fashioned to resemble a wooden crate, and is marked with "ENDANGERED SPECIES."
In addition to supporting the noble cause of bringing awareness to some of the most threatened species on our planet, the 2015 Endangered Species Mountain Gorilla 1 oz silver proof from the New Zealand Mint is also highly collectible, with only 2,000 of these coins minted worldwide. Whether you've already started collecting this scarce series or are just now becoming interested, add this coin to your collection before they're gone!
