There are an almost limitless amount of mystery, beauty, and intrigue beneath the vast expanse of our seas. With this abundance of sea life, the Pacific island of Palau has maintained its Marine Life Protection series of coins since 1992. Beginning in 2011, this series included .925 fine sterling silver coins that celebrated various sea shells and their corresponding pearls. The 2014 Palau Pearl Beauty of the Sea Silver Proof Coin contains 0.7463 troy ounce of fine silver content and is designated with a legal tender face value of 5 Dollars. As a collector's item, these coins are limited to a worldwide mintage of just 2,500!
The reverse design shows a Queen Conch shell, the dwelling of a species of sea snail. The conch shell is colorized a beautiful shade of pink. Set in the center of the shell is an actual pink pearl, which will always retain this natural color. The series name "MARINE LIFE PROTECTION" runs along the top rim, with the legend "BEAUTY OF THE SEA" cutting across the bottom portion of the design. The year-date "2014" is placed just below on a textured background that resembles the sea floor.
The obverse shows the Rainbow's End shield under an outrigger canoe, showing Neptune and a mermaid with treasure under the sea, with the inscription "RAINBOW'S END," a national motto of sorts, placed within the emblem. The issuing nation "REPUBLIC OF PALAU" is inscribed along the top rim, with three stars on either side. The denomination "5$" is placed at the bottom rim.
The small nation of Palau takes its native wildlife and ecological beauty very seriously. The maintenance of these important features is also essential to promoting the island's tourism industry, as many residents' livelihood depends upon it. This is why the 2014 Palau Pearl Beauty of the Sea silver proof is a fitting coin for Palau, focusing on a central theme of the country's history and island culture in general.
