The kookaburra is a small bird native to the Australian Bush that is noteworthy for its "laughter." This distinctive bird is a fitting subject for one of the country's most popular silver coin series, which is back again with the 2016 1 oz Silver Kookaburra from the Perth Mint! Each of these coins is struck from .999 fine silver, contains 1 troy ounce of pure silver, and is legal tender with a face value of 1 Dollar. In addition, these coins are limited to a worldwide mintage of just 500,000 pieces.
The reverse design shows the so-called "laughing jackass" positioned on the wooden post of a barbed wire fence. The desolate Australian Outback is shown in the background by an empty field and a barren tree. The barbed wire wraps around the fence post, while the kookaburra's pattern of feathers is shown in great detail. The series name "AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA" runs along the top rim. At the bottom rim, the year-date "2016" and the specifications "1oz 999 SILVER" are inscribed.
On the obverse, Ian Rank Broadley's design of HM Queen Elizabeth II facing right is shown. The image is surrounded by an outer ring containing three inscriptions: the Queen's name "ELIZABETH II" is placed against the rim to the left; the issuing country "AUSTRALIA" is found to the right; and the denomination "1 DOLLAR" is inscribed at the bottom rim. The coin's edge is reeded.
While plenty of precious metal investors are drawn to the .999 fine silver of the coin, the Silver Kookaburra is also a favorite among collectors thanks to its limited mintage figures (500,000).
