For decades, the Perth Mint has been internationally renowned for its gold and silver bullion coin series. In addition to its Silver Koala and Silver Kookaburra coins, one of the mint's flagship products has been the Gold Kangaroo (formerly known as the Gold Nugget series). Now, for the first time ever, the Perth Mint has introduced a silver version of its popular coin series with the new 2016 1 oz Silver Kangaroo (BU)! These Brilliant Uncirculated coins are struck from extra-pure .9999 fine silver for a total of 1 troy ounce of pure silver content, making these new coins the first-ever .9999 fine silver bullion coin from Australia.
The reverse design is a fresh take on the original image of a red kangaroo hopping toward the left that has been used on previous Gold Kangaroo coins, including the 2016 1 kilo Gold Kangaroo coin. The kangaroo is surrounded by radiant light that extends in every direction. The outer rim uses an unique wave pattern to create an outer ring. In blank spaces cut out from the wave design, the inscription "AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO" is found at the top rim, while the year-date "2016" is followed by the technical specifications "1oz 9999 SILVER" along the bottom rim. The "P" mintmark for Perth is placed against the right rim.
The obverse shows Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II facing right. The same attractive wave pattern fills the outer ring around the rim. Rim inscriptions include the Queen's name, "ELIZABETH II," followed by the issuing nation, "AUSTRALIA" at the top-left and top-right of the rim, respectively. The bottom rim is inscribed with the denomination, "1 DOLLAR," with a bullet point on either side. A new security feature from the Perth Mint that is being introduced on the 2016 Silver Kangaroo is a micro-engraved letter A inside the first A of AUSTRALIA on the obverse. This new feature, which can only be seen under a magnifying glass, makes the Silver Kangaroo much more difficult to counterfeit.
There's a great deal of excitement surrounding the 2016 1 oz Silver Kangaroo (BU) from Australia's Perth Mint, as both collectors and investors now have a new silver coin design to add to their holdings.
