The Perth Mint (Australia) is back with its Lunar series yet again with the 2016 Lunar Monkey 1 oz proof silver coin! In honor of the Year of the Monkey in the Chinese Lunar calendar, these coins feature an adorable monkey design in addition to their .999 fine silver content. Each coin contains a total of 1 troy ounce of pure silver and comes neatly housed in its original government packaging and display box from the mint.
The reverse design, created by Ing Ing Jong, depicts a pair of monkeys crouched upon a sturdy tree branch. The adult monkey on the left looks on with an apparent smile on its face as the smaller monkey on the right holds a fruit in its hand. The Chinese character for "Monkey" is placed between the two monkeys, while the "P" mintmark for Perth is found against the left rim. "Year of the Monkey" is inscribed in stylized text along the bottom rim.
On the obverse, Ian Rank-Broadley's design of HM Queen Elizabeth II facing right is shown. The Queen's name is inscribed against the top-left of the rim, followed clockwise by the issuing country "AUSTRALIA," the denomination "1 DOLLAR," the year-date "2016," and the weight and purity specifications "1oz 999 SILVER."
The Perth Mint's Lunar series has remained one of the most popular modern coin series anywhere in the world, now in its second cycle. Those born under the sign of the Monkey are said to be clever, optimistic, and filled with a sense of adventure.
