One of the Perth Mint's most widely collected coin series is the Lunar series, which celebrates the various signs of the Chinese Lunar calendar, also known as the Chinese zodiac. The series is back again for the Year of the Monkey with the 2016 Australia Kilo Proof Silver Monkey coin! Struck from .999 fine silver, each of these coins contains a total of one kilogram (32.15 troy ounces) of pure silver, making it one of the largest-size government-issued coins that is made available to the public! Each legal tender coin carries a face value of 30 Dollars.
The reverse design—the work of artist Ing Ing Jong—shows an adult monkey and its baby sitting in a tree branch. The younger of the two monkeys holds a peach in its hand, while its elder looks on approvingly. The "P" mintmark for Perth is found against the left rim, and the Chinese character meaning "Monkey" is found near the top rim between the monkeys' heads. The legend "Year of the Monkey" is found in stylized script along the bottom rim.
On the obverse, Ian Rank-Broadley's design of Queen Elizabeth II facing right is shown. The top half of the rim includes the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II" and "AUSTRALIA," indicating the issuing nation. The bottom half of the rim is filled by the specifications "1 KG 999 SILVER," followed by the year-date "2016" and the denomination "30 DOLLARS." The coin comes with its original packaging and display box from the Perth Mint.
With their impressive diameter of more than 100 mm, these coins allow the viewer to take in Ing Ing Jong's well-executed design in all of its beautiful detail. Moreover, as a proof coin, these 2016 Kilo Silver Proof Monkey coins exhibit mirror-like fields that stand out against frosted relief devices. Even better, they have a limited mintage of only 500 coins, making them superbly scarce collectibles as well as a source of government-issued silver. Whether you're adding to your silver stack or are more geared toward collecting, these Year of the Monkey kilo silver coins are a great addition to any portfolio!
