The Perth Mint (Australia) is one of the world's premier government mints, and has long lead the trend in issuing Chinese Lunar Calendar coin series. You can add the 2016 Perth Mint 1 oz Silver Monkey Gilded Coin to your collection if you're looking for a Lunar silver coin that is beautifully enhanced with 24-karat gold! Only 50,000 of these coins were minted for worldwide distribution, but 2,500 are included in the 2016 Lunar Monkey Type Set. This leaves 47,000 for individual purchase. Each of these .999 fine silver coins is legal tender with a face value of 1 Dollar and contains 1 troy ounce of pure silver.
The reverse design, created by Ing Ing Jong, shows a pair of monkeys sitting on a tree branch. The younger of the two monkeys sitting on the right holds an apricot in its hand. The "P" mintmark is placed against the rim to the left. "Year of the Monkey" runs along the bottom rim while the Chinese character for "Monkey" is found at the top of the design.
The obverse uses Ian Rank-Broadley's right-facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The top rim includes inscriptions of Her Majesty's name and the issuing country "AUSTRALIA." Meanwhile, the bottom rim bears the weight and purity, "1OZ 999 SILVER," the year-date "2016," and the denomination "1 DOLLAR."
Now in its second iteration, the Perth Mint's Lunar Series sets the standard for the various popular Lunar-themed coins and bullion that have followed to market. Even better, these 2016 1 oz Gilded Silver Monkey Coins feature gilding in 24-karat gold for an attractive contrast with the rest of the design. Each coin is accompanied by its original display case and outer box from the mint. Thanks to their limited mintage, these collectible gilded silver coins would make a great addition to any collection!
