Each of the last 30 years, the U.S. Mint has issued the Gold Eagle bullion coin to great effect. It has become one of the most trusted gold coins in the world, and is back again with the 2016 1 oz American Gold Eagle (Brilliant Uncirculated)! These coins are struck from .917 fine (22-karat) gold and each have a legal tender face value of 50 Dollars. In total, each coin also contains 1 troy ounce of pure gold content.
The obverse shows the classic Saint-Gaudens design of Lady Liberty. Miss Liberty strides forward triumphantly, holding a lit torch in her outstretched right hand and an olive branch off to the side in her opposite hand. The Capitol building can be seen in the distance at the bottom-left while radiant light emits from over the horizon. Fifty stars line the outer rim, with the legend "LIBERTY" at the top rim. The year-date "2016" is found to the right of Lady Liberty. The coin's edge is reeded.
The reverse, designed by Miley Busiek, shows a family of bald eagles. The father eagle returns to the nest with a small, leafy branch in its talons. The mother eagle sits in the nest, her two young eaglets protected in her wings. The mottoes "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" appear to the left and right of the scene, respectively. The issuing nation "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" curls along the top rim. Across the bottom half of the rim, the coin's weight and purity are listed along with the denomination, "1 OZ. FINE GOLD~50 DOLLARS."
One of the advantages of the Gold Eagle is that it is easily recognized all around the world. The coins both clearly display their weight in gold, contain clear American symbolism, and because of their legal tender status are backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government. Investors are drawn to the coin's precious metal content as well as its highly acclaimed artistic design.
