The Perth Mint's popular Silver Koala bullion coin series returns for 2016 with yet another original design of everyone's favorite furry marsupial. The standard one-ounce version of this coin is always in high demand, and the 2016 Australia 1 oz Silver Koala coin (Brilliant Uncirculated) enjoys legal tender status with a face value of 1 Dollar. Each coin is struck from .999 fine silver and contains a total of 1 troy ounce of pure silver.
The brand new reverse design shows a koala walking precociously across a tree branch. Its fur is shown in great detail, accentuating the animal's fuzzy texture. The legend (and series name) "AUSTRALIAN KOALA" is inscribed in bold lettering at the top rim, while the "P" mintmark for Perth is found against the rim to the right. The year-date "2016" along with the weight and purity specifications "1oz 999 SILVER" are found at the bottom rim.
The obverse shows Ian Rank-Broadley's design of Queen Elizabeth II facing right. Her Majesty's name runs along the outer rim to the left, followed by the issuing nation "AUSTRALIA" to the right. The denomination "1 DOLLAR" is found at the bottom rim, flanked on each side by a decorative bullet point. The edge is reeded.
It is unlikely that any other of the distinctive animals of Australia (even the kangaroo) are more beloved than the koala. Thanks to its cute appearance that closely resembles a teddy bear, these tree-dwelling creatures are a wonder to behold.
