You can relive one of the most iconic moments from the Star Wars series of films with the 2016 Han Solo 1/4 oz Gold Coin from the New Zealand Mint's Star Wars Classic series. Each of these coins is struck from extra-pure .9999 fine gold for a total of one-quarter troy ounce (0.25 oz) of pure gold. They are also legal tender with a face value of 25 dollars. In addition to an ultra-low mintage of just 1,000 pieces, these coins are accompanied by their original display box and packaging.
On the reverse design, Captain Han Solo is shown petrified in the carbonite prison from Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. Solo's face is frozen in an agonized expression while his hands are held outward in defense. The rest of the design is filled by the uneven surface of the carbonite. Against the rim to the right, the weight and purity specifications "1/4 oz 9999 Fine Gold" are inscribed, along with the copyright for Lucasfilm Ltd.
The obverse uses Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II facing right. Rim inscriptions include Her Majesty's name, the issuing country "NIUE," the denomination "25 DOLLARS," and the year-date "2016." The coin's edge is reeded. The coin's diameter measures 20 mm across.
Interestingly, the relief of the coin creates the illusion that Han Solo himself is trapped within the surface of the coin, as if the gold were carbonite. The attractive display box and limited mintage of only 1,000 coins augment the collectible appeal of these officially licensed Star Wars gold coins. Add the 2016 Star Wars Classic Han Solo 1/4 oz Gold Coin to your collection from Gainesville Coins before these limited-edition coins are sold out!
