Since such coins first began to appear on the market about two decades ago, Chinese Lunar-themed designs have increasingly become popular around the world. This is especially true of the Perth Mint's Lunar series, which includes the 2016 1/4 oz Gold Lunar Year of the Monkey coin. These coins are legal tender and bear a face value of 25 Dollars. Struck from extra-pure .9999 fine gold, each coin contains a total of one-quarter troy oz (0.25 troy ounce) of fine gold content.
The reverse is graced by Ing Ing Jong's design of a small monkey seated upon a tree branch. The monkey gazes upon a peach or apricot hanging from an overhanging branch. "Year of the Monkey" is inscribed along the bottom rim while the Chinese character for "Monkey" is found in the field to the left. The "P" mintmark for Perth is placed against the left rim.
Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II dominates the obverse. Rim inscriptions surrounding Her Majesty include "ELIZABETH II" and the issuing country "AUSTRALIA" around the top rim, along with "1/4oz 9999 GOLD" for the weight and purity, the year of issue "2016," and the denomination "25 DOLLARS" across the bottom rim. The diameter is 22.6 mm across.
In the past century, previous Years of the Monkey are 1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, and 2004. People born under this sign are said to be clever, versatile, lively, and honest.
