In honor of the 100th anniversary of the design, the Mercury dime has been re-released in extra-pure .9999 fine gold. The 2016W Mercury Dime 1/10 oz Gold Coin PCGS SP70 First Strike also boasts the highest possible grade, certified SP70, from Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). The designation "First Strike" also indicates that PCGS received the coin within 30 days of its issuance. These legal tender coins appropriately have a face value of 10 Cents, like the original, and contain a total of one-tenth oz (0.10 troy ounce) of pure gold.
The obverse bears the left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty with short curls. She wears a Phrygian cap with wings on the sides, representing liberty of thought. The year-date is found beneath Miss Liberty's neck with the artist's monogram just to the right. The legend "LIBERTY" spreads across the top half of the rim while "IN GOD WE TRUST" is in the bottom-left of the field. The coin's edge is reeded.
The ancient symbol of a fasces is used on the reverse. This bundle of rods symbolizes strength in unity while the accompanying axe alludes to war. The image is balanced by the symbol of peace, an olive branch, twisting around the fasces. The issuing nation "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" runs along the top rim and the denomination "ONE DIME" is placed at the bottom rim. The "W" mintmark for West Point appears just to the right of "ONE." The motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" is found to the right of the fasces with the specifications "AU 24K. 1/10 OZ." beneath.
Collectors have been thrilled about the return of the Mercury dime. In addition to their 24-karat gold purity, these coins were also limited to a mintage of just 125,000, quickly selling out from the U.S. Mint. If you're looking for the collectible appeal of a coin certified in flawless condition by a leading third-party grader, add the 2016W Mercury Dime 1/10 oz Gold Coin PCGS SP70 First Strike to your collection!
