Collectors have flocked to the new 24-karat (.9999 fine) gold version of the Mercury dime, released by the U.S. Mint on the centennial of the original "Winged Liberty" design's release. You can pick up one of your own from Gainesville Coins with the 2016 Mercury Dime 1/10 oz Gold Coin NGC SP70 Early Releases. These coins received the highest possible grade from Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), SP70, in addition to earning the "Early Releases" modifier by being submitted for grading within 30 days of being issued. These coins each contain 1/10 oz (0.1 troy ounce) of fine gold content and are fittingly given a legal tender value of 10 Cents.
On the obverse, the "Winged Liberty" design created for the original Mercury dime by A.A. Weinman is used. With her hair in short curls, Lady Liberty wears a Phrygian cap with wings, combining an ancient symbol of liberty (the cap) with the American ideal of liberty of thought. "IN GOD WE TRUST" is found at the bottom-left of the design. "LIBERTY" runs along the top half of the rim. Weinman's "AW" monogram is placed in the bottom-right of the field with the year-date "2016" just below.
The reverse design also uses Weinman's original work. A fasces (a bundle of rods bound by three leather straps) is shown with an axe, representing not only war and justice but the greater strength acquired from unity. This iconography is counterbalanced by an olive branch (representing peace) wrapped around the fasces. The issuing country "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" rounds the top rim, while the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" appears in the field to the right. The purity "AU 24K." and weight "1/10 OZ." are just below. The "W" mintmark for West Point divides the denomination "ONE DIME" at the bottom rim.
The gorgeous and symbolically rich design by Weinman is well-honored by the .9999 fine gold on the 100th anniversary of the classic Mercury dime. Even better, you can be sure that you have a flawless example of this coin with the 2016 Mercury Dime 1/10 oz Gold Coin NGC SP70 Early Releases from Gainesville Coins. With a limited mintage of just 125,000, these coins almost immediately sold out from the mint, so be sure to get yours!
