Since 1986, the American Silver Eagle has been the premier silver coin anywhere in the world. Struck from .999 fine silver and backed by the full faith and credit of the American government, these coins are recognized by coin collectors and bullion investors all around the globe. As legal tender, each coin bears a face value of 1 Dollar and contains 1 troy ounce of pure silver content.
The obverse design of the Silver Eagle was originally created by A.A. Weinman for the silver half dollar in 1916. Before the beautiful image of Lady Liberty was revived for the Silver Eagle in 1986, it had last appeared on an American coin back in 1947. Miss Liberty is shown striding to her left, draped in a dress resembling the American flag. Her outstretched arm beckons invitingly to the rising Sun in the east. The legend "LIBERTY" stretches across the top rim, while the year-date "2017" is found beneath Lady Liberty's foot. The motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is placed to her right.
John Mercanti's exquisitely detailed design of a bald eagle in heraldic pose graces the reverse design. Carrying arrows in one talon and an olive branch in another, the eagle also clasps a ribbon in its beak that reads "E PLURIBUS UNUM." Thirteen stars arranged in an inverted triangle hover above the eagle's head. The bottom rim features the inscriptions "1 OZ. FINE SILVER" for the weight and composition, as well as the denomination "ONE DOLLAR." The top rim has a slightly larger inscription for the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA." The coin's edge is reeded.
