2017 is the Year of the Rooster in the Chinese Lunar Calendar, and the Perth Mint 2017 1/2 oz Lunar Rooster Series II silver coin is a great way to spread some joy to friends who were born under the Sign of the Rooster.
Persons born in 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, and 2017 were born in the Year of the Rooster. According to Chinese astrology, Roosters are energetic, hardworking, and attentive.
The Rooster is the tenth sign of the Chinese Zodiac, but this is only the second time the Perth Mint has produced a Lunar Rooster coin. The reverse features a peaceful garden scene, as the Rooster watches over a hen and her three chicks pecking under a tree. A squash vine grows in the right distance to complete the scene. The Chinese character for Rooster is struck to the left of the Rooster, while the motto "Year of the Rooster" appears along the lower rim.
The obverse of the coin displays the image of Queen Elizabeth II as portrayed by Ian Rank-Broadley. The inscriptions Elizabeth II, Australia, 50 Cents, 2017, and 1/2 oz 9999 Ag are positioned around the rim. Each coin is encased at the Mint in a protective clear capsule.
