The 2017 Lunar Rooster 2 oz silver coin is the 10th entry in Series II of Perth Mint's famous Chinese New Year coin program. Capturing the style of traditional Chinese art, the design of this 2 troy ounce coin depicts a family of chickens in a shady garden. The hen and her three chicks are scratching for food, while the alert rooster keeps watch. In the background is a flowering squash vine, climbing a bamboo trellis. The Chinese character for Rooster is inscribed to the left of the Rooster, above the hen. The motto "Year of the Rooster" is found along the bottom rim.
The obverse carries Ian Rank-Broadley's image of Elizabeth II in her role as Queen of Australia and the Commonwealth. Her name and "Australia" is inscribed to either side of her bust, while the year-date 2017 is below. To either side of the year is the weight and purity of the 2 oz coin, and the denomination of 2 Dollars.
2017 is the latest Year of the Rooster in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese Lunar Calendar. Persons born in 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, and 2005 were also born in the Year of the Rooster.
People born under the Sign of the Rooster are said to be alert, enthusiastic, and sociable. According to Chinese astrology, Roosters pair well with the Ox, the Snake, and the Monkey.
The 2017 Perth Mint 2 oz Lunar Rooster silver coin is struck from extra pure 9999 fine silver -- 99.99% pure!
