The 2017 Australia Kilo Silver Kookaburra continues the Perth Mint's bullion coin series that has also become a hit with collectors. With 1 kilogram (32.15 troy oz) of pure silver and an annually changing reverse design, these coins offer a combination of hefty precious metal content and collectible appeal. Each coin is legal tender with a face value of 30 Dollars and is struck from .999 fine silver.
The reverse design shows a pair of kookaburra, a distinctive and indigenous kingfisher bird to the Australian Outback. The two birds perch upon a rural fence within a circle. The "P" mintmark for Perth and the artist Natasha Muhl's initials "NM" can be found to the left. Around the top rim, the legend "AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA" is inscribed. The year-date "2017" and the weight and purity "1KILO 999 SILVER" can be found at the bottom rim.
On the obverse, HM Queen Elizabeth II's portrait, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, is shown facing right. Her Majesty's effigy is likewise contained within a circle. Inscriptions around the outer rim include the denomination "30 DOLLARS," the issuing nation "AUSTRALIA," and the Queen's name.
The coin you'll receive comes in a hard plastic capsule for protection. The kookaburra is said to have a call that resembles a charming cackle, and the Perth Mint wants you to know you'll be "laughing all the way to the bank!"
