The Peoples Republic of China have done away with fractions in their coin programs, in favor of metric grams. The 2017 8 gram Chinese Gold Panda (Sealed In Original Mint Plastic) is the replacement for the 1/4 troy ounce (7.775 gr) coin.
The Chinese Gold Panda introduced "artistic bullion coins" to the world in 1982. With one exception, these coins have featured a different panda design each year.
This year's reverse design shows an adult panda stripping the leaves from a bamboo stalk for his meal. To the viewer's left is the denomination of 100 ¥ (100 yuan). The coin's weight and purity appear below the lovable black and white bear, proclaiming 8 grams of .999 gold.
The obverse of the 2017 Chinese Gold Panda 8 gram coin continues the tradition of featuring the ancient Tower of Prayer for Good Harvest, located in Beijing's Temple of Heaven complex. "Peoples Republic of China" in Chinese characters arch along the rim above the temple, while the year-date 2017 is struck near the bottom.
The attractive 2017 Chinese Panda 8 gram gold coin sealed in mint plastic is limited to 600,000 coins worldwide.
