The Gold Buffalo is the first and only extra-pure (.9999 fine) gold bullion coin offered by the U.S. Mint. Its iconic design from the Buffalo nickel and its incredibly pure gold content have attracted flocks of investors and collectors to the annual coin series. These 2017 American Gold Buffalo 1 oz Coins each contain 1 troy ounce of fine gold content and are issued as legal tender with a face value of 50 Dollars.
The obverse uses the right-facing portrait of a Native American chief created by artist James Earle Fraser. A small incuse "F" for the author is found on the chief's shoulder just below the year-date "2017." The legend "LIBERTY" curls along the rim to the upper-right, just as in the original Buffalo nickel design. The edge is reeded.
Fraser's image of an American bison (also known as a buffalo) facing left appears on the reverse. The top rim bears the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" The motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" is found just above the buffalo's back, while the other motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is placed just below its face. The rounded ground the buffalo stands on is incused with the denomination "$50" with the weight and purity specifications just below, "1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD."
After recently celebrating its 10th anniversary, the American Gold Buffalo series has remained among the most popular coins produced by the United States Mint. Like its predecessors, the 2017 American Gold Buffalo 1 oz Coin is struck from .9999 fine (99.99% pure) gold, demonstrating the mint's remarkable capacity for refining precious metals.
