There is perhaps no more popular coin series in the world than Perth Mint's Lunar coins. This year's iteration showcases the 2018 Lunar Year of the Dog with a 10 ounce silver coin! These hefty bullion coins are struck from .9999 fine silver and contain a total of 10 ounces of pure silver. As legal tender, they are designated with a $10 face value.
The reverse design depicts a two dogs, an adult and a puppy, laying down. Both dogs are of the German Shephard breed. The legend "Year of the Dog" is inscribed near the bottom rim. To the left of the adult dog, the character for "Dog" in the Chinese Lunar calendar is shown. (There is a separate Chinese character when referring to the actual animal of a dog.)
The obverse features an image of HM Queen Elizabeth II facing left. Around the outer rim, the coin's weight and purity, the year of issue "2018," the denomination, and issuing country "AUSTRALIA" are inscribed.
The mint first introduced its Lunar series in the 1990s, and has produced a new design annually (based on the Lunar year's zodiac sign) in the two decades since. These beautiful designs highlight the richness of Chinese culture and prominently feature the zodiac animal. For these reasons, collectors clamor each year to get their Lunar series gold and silver coins.
