2018 marks the Year of the Dog in the traditional Chinese zodiac, and this is once again celebrated on Perth Mint's Lunar series gold coins! Struck from extra-pure .9999 fine gold like its predecessors, the new 2018 Lunar Year of the Dog 1/2 oz Gold Coin contains a total of one-half troy ounce (0.5 troy oz) of pure gold, and bears a legal tender value of 50 Dollars.
The reverse designed is the work of Perth Mint artist Ing Ing Jong. It shows a dog craning its neck as it looks over its shoulder. The dog stands on a rocky platform that has a meandering tree growing out of it. The inscription "Year of the Dog" is found along the bottom rim, while the Chinese character for "Dog" from the Chinese zodiac (as opposed to the character for an actual dog, the animal) is placed to the right. The edge is reeded.
On the obverse, the classic effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II facing right, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, features prominently at the center of the coin. Around the outer rim, inscriptions include the Queen's name "ELIZABETH II," as well as the issuing country "AUSTRALIA," the year of issue "2018," the denomination "50 DOLLARS" and weight and purity.
