Since the 1990s, Perth Mint, located in Western Australia, has captured the attention of the collecting and investing communities with its yearly Chinese Lunar series coins. The popular series is back for this year with the 2018 Lunar Year of the Dog 1/4 oz Gold Coin. Struck from .9999 fine gold for a total of one-quarter ounce (0.25 troy oz) of fine gold content, each coin is also designated as legal tender with a $25 face value.
On the reverse, a precocious terrier is shown bending its neck to look over its shoulder. The dog stands on a rocky platform that has a meandering tree growing out of the rocks. The inscription "Year of the Dog" is placed near the bottom rim, and the "P" mintmark appears to the left. The Chinese character for "Dog" from the Chinese zodiac (as opposed to the character for an actual dog, the animal) is placed to the right.
The obverse design is graced by the image of HM Queen Elizabeth II. Designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, Her Majesty faces right while wearing her royal tiara. "ELIZABETH II" is inscribed across the top rim along with the issuing country "AUSTRALIA." At the bottom rim, the year-date "2018," the weight and purity "1/4 OZ 9999 GOLD," and the denomination "25 DOLLARS" are also inscribed. The edge is reeded.
There are few annual coin series that can match the staying power of Perth's Lunar series. This is partly due to its unique design each year, as well as the exceptional quality of the gold and silver used to strike the coins.
