Perth Mint (Australia) has wisely cultivated a close relationship with its neighbors in Asia, offering its annual Lunar series gold and silver coins for the past two decades. This year's 2018 Lunar Year of the Dog 1/20 oz Gold Coins are available at Gainesville Coins! Each of these coins is struck from .9999 fine gold and is legal tender with a face value of 5 Dollars.
On the reverse created by Perth Mint artist Ing Ing Jong, a dog of terrier breed is shown craning its neck as it looks over its shoulder. The dog stands on a rocky platform that has a meandering tree growing out of it. The inscription "Year of the Dog" is found along the bottom rim, while the Chinese character for "Dog" from the Chinese zodiac (as opposed to the character for an actual dog, the animal) is placed to the right.
The obverse design is graced by an effigy of HRM Queen Elizabeth II facing right, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. Rim inscriptions include "ELIZABETH II," the issuing country "AUSTRALIA," the year-date "2018," as well as the denomination "5 DOLLARS" and weight and purity, "1/20 OZ 9999 GOLD." The edge is reeded.
Previous instances of the Year of the Dog over the last century are in 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, and 2006. People born under this sign are said to be courageous and loyal. With a fantastic new design of "man's best friend," these 2018 Lunar Year of the Dog 1/20 oz Gold Coins from Perth Mint are too good to pass up!
