Since 1982, the state mint of the People's Republic of China has issued gold bullion coins featuring images of one of the country's iconic national symbols, the panda. Today, the Gold Panda coin series is among the most beloved in the world. It is issued in various sizes ranging from 1 gram to 30 grams. The 2018 15 Gram Chinese Gold Panda comes sealed in its original packaging. Each coin is struck from .999 fine gold for a total of 15 grams of pure gold. These coins are also legal tender with a face value of 200 Yuan.
A detailed depiction of a panda's face appears on the reverse of the coin. Bamboo stalks stand in the backdrop while the panda holds one in its hand. More leaves decorate the top and bottom of the coin beyond the exergue, adorning the inscriptions "15 g Au .999" along the top rim and the denomination at the bottom rim.
The obverse (front) design shows one of China's most famous pieces of architecture, the Hall of Good Harvest at the Temple of Heaven. Rim inscriptions include a series of Chinese characters identifying the coin as well as the year of issue "2018" at the bottom rim. Each coin is 1.85 mm thick with a reeded edge and measures 27 mm in diameter.
The release of the 2018 15 Gram Chinese Gold Panda marks the third year that the mint has used the metric system for the weight of its bullion coins. This makes the Gold Panda unique among major world bullion coins, which usually measure the metal weight in terms of a troy ounce (31.1 grams).
