The Royal Australian Mint has joined its counterpart in Western Australia, the Perth Mint, in issuing its own 2018 1/4 oz Lunar Gold Dog coin to honor the upcoming Chinese New Year! This Brilliant Uncirculated bullion coin not only contains one-quarter ounce (0.25 troy oz) of pure gold and is 99.99% pure, but features beautiful artwork that highlights "Man's Best Friend" in the animal kingdom. As legal tender, these coins bear a $25 face value.
This year's updated reverse design shows two small dogs of labrador breed enjoying a picturesque outing in the mountains. "2018" is inscribed at the top rim, indicating the year of issue. The Chinese character for the Lunar sign of the Dog appears to the left. At the bottom rim, "1/4oz .9999 Au" indicates the coin's weight and purity. The edge uses a reeded design.
On the obverse, the animals of the Chinese zodiac are displayed around the outer rim along with different phases of the moon. A portrait of Queen Elizabeth II designed by artist Ian Rank-Broadley is placed at the center, as well as the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II," the issuing country "AUSTRALIA," and the denomination "25 DOLLARS," with small circles separating each element.
Every twelve years, the pattern of the Chinese zodiac makes one full cycle and repeats. The next Year of the Dog won't occur until 2030, so don't hesitate to buy the 2018 Year of the Dog 1/4 oz Gold Coin (Royal Australian Mint) while they are still available at Gainesville Coins!
