The Gold Buffalo is the only "four-nines" pure (.9999 fine) gold coin produced by the U.S. Mint. Introduced in 2006, the coin has enjoyed widespread popularity thanks to its classic design and high-quality gold content. In addition to 1 troy oz of fine gold content, each coin is also legal tender with a $50 face value. This coin has been graded a perfect MS70 by NGC, as well!
The obverse design shows the right-facing portrait of a Native American chief, originally created in 1913 by sculptor James Earle Fraser. The figure is believed to be a composite of three different men that Fraser used as models. The year of issue "2018" can be found on the shoulder near the bottom-left rim. The artist's monogram is placed just below. Along the rim to the right, the traditional legend "LIBERTY" is inscribed.
The classic buffalo image (also designed by Fraser in 1913) that once appeared on the U.S. five-cent nickel is used for the reverse design. The bison is flanked by inscriptions reading "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" while the issuing country "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" is placed at the top rim. The denomination "$50" is joined by the weight and purity "1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD" at the bottom rim. The edge is given a reeded pattern.
