Few modern bullion coins have received the consistent praise of the Gold Buffalo, the contemporary rebirth of the old Buffalo nickel. This .9999 fine gold coin contains 1 troy ounce of pure gold and is designated as U.S. legal tender with a $50 face value. This 2018 American Gold Buffalo PCGS MS70 First Strike has been professionally graded by PCGS, receiving the highest possible grade of MS70! In addition, the First Strike modifier indicates the coin was received for grading within 30 days of being issued.
The obverse depicts the bust of an American Indian chief facing right. His hair is pulled to one side in a braid while feathers adorn the back of his head. The year-date "2018" is found near the rim to the bottom-left on his shoulder. A small incuse "F" for the original artist, James Earle Fraser, is just below. The legend "LIBERTY" curls along the rim to the right. A slightly textured background gives the coin's relief a more sculpted appearance. The edge design is reeded.
On the reverse, an American bison (or buffalo) that was also designed by Fraser is shown facing toward the left. Compared to the much smaller Buffalo nickel, this image is much larger and more detailed than its predecessor. The national mottoes "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" are placed to the left and right of the buffalo, respectively. Incuse inscriptions beneath the buffalo's feet indicate the denomination "$50" and the composition "1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD." The issuing country "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" runs along the top rim.
Until the advent of the American Gold Buffalo, the United States Mint did not offer any gold coins that were greater than .917 fine gold, the purity of the Gold Eagle. (Commemorative gold coins are .900 fine.) Besides its exceptionally pure gold, the Gold Buffalo's design remains a favorite among collectors. The Perfect 70 grade only adds to this coin's allure!
