The flagship gold bullion coin of the United States Mint is the American Gold Eagle. These 22-karat (.917 fine) gold coins are a durable bullion investment and a popular modern collectible in high grades. In addition to containing 1/10 troy oz (0.1 troy ounce) of pure gold, the 2018 $5 American Gold Eagle PCGS MS69 First Strike has been graded MS69 by PCGS, the second-highest grade a coin can receive! As a "First Strike," it was received by PCGS within 30 days of being issued by the U.S. Mint.
Augustus Saint-Gaudens famous Liberty design graces the obverse of the coin. 50 stars line the outer rim and the legend "LIBERTY" is inscribed above. Lady Liberty carries a lit torch in one arm and an oak branch in the other. "2018" is placed to her right and the U.S. Capitol building is to her left. The edge design is reeded.
The reverse uses a family of eagles theme designed by artist Miley Busiek. The mother eagle sits with her two eaglets as the father eagle returns to the nest carrying an olive branch in its talons. The weight and denomination are inscribed at the bottom rim: "1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD~5 DOLLARS." The issuing country is found across the top rim, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA."
The U.S. Mint produced no legal tender gold coins between 1933 and 1983. In addition to certain commemorative gold coins that benefit specific sponsor organizations such as the Boy Scouts of America or the various Armed Forces, the American Gold Eagle is the official gold bullion coin of the United States. It is minted each year for investors and the general public to enjoy the benefits of owning gold.
