The Lunar Year of the Dog is back in 2018, and the Perth Mint is celebrating the occasion with the 2018 1/2 oz Colorized Silver Dog coin as part of its Lunar Series II!
In addition to being legal tender with a face value of 50 Cents, these coins are struck from extra-pure .9999 fine (99.99% pure) silver. By weight, each coin contains one-half troy ounce (0.5 troy oz) of silver content.
Ing Ing Jong's design of two adorable German shepherds appears on the reverse. The details of the artwork are extremely lifelike, and the colorized effect brings out the realism even more. Grass surrounds the dog and her puppy while peony flowers are seen to the top-left. "Year of the Dog" is inscribed at the bottom rim. The Chinese character for the Lunar sign of the Dog appears near the top of the design.
The obverse uses Ian Rank-Broadley's right-facing effigy of the monarch Queen Elizabeth II. The outer rim is filled with inscriptions: "1/2oz 9999 Ag" is followed by the year-date "2018" and denomination "50 CENTS" along the bottom rim, while "ELIZABETH II" and the issuing country "AUSTRALIA" run across the top rim. The coin's edge has a reeded pattern.
Previous instances of the Year of the Dog in the last century happened in 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, and 2006. Gold and silver are considered auspicious gifts during the Lunar New Year, so buy your 2018 1/2 oz Colorized Lunar Dog Silver Coin while they remain in inventory!
