Australia's Perth Mint has adapted the Chinese Lunar calendar theme into one of the most popular bullion coin series in the world. As an added perk for collectors, this year's 2018 1 oz Lunar Silver Dog Lion Privy coin is limited to a mintage of just 30,000 coins worldwide!
The coin is struck from .9999 fine silver and contains a total of 1 troy ounce of pure silver by weight. Its legal tender face value is $1.
The new reverse design depicts a German shepherd peacefully lying down next to its puppy. Peony flowers appear to the left and the Chinese character for "Dog" (in the sense of the Lunar calendar) appears above. The special-edition Lion privy mark is placed to the right just above the mintmark. "Year of the Dog" curls along the bottom rim.
On the obverse, a portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II facing right is used. She is encircled by rim inscriptions that include "ELIZABETH II" and "AUSTRALIA" and the top rim, while "1oz 9999 Ag," the year-date "2018," and the denomination "1 DOLLAR" are all found at the bottom rim.
The Lunar Year of the Dog only occurs once every twelve years in the Chinese zodiac. People born under this sign are said to be loyal, hard-working, and friendly -- embodying the best qualities of our favorite animal companion.
