The cute (but not particularly cuddly!) marsupial known as the koala is one of the many wildlife wonders that make Australia one of the most exotic ecosystems in the world. Like many of these strange creatures only native to Australia, the koala is immortalized on one of the country's most popular series of silver coins, the Silver Koala. Each 2018 1 oz Silver Koala coin is struck from .9999 fine silver for a total of 1 troy ounce of pure silver by weight. This year, the series is also limited to a worldwide mintage of just 300,000 coins!
The reverse design of the coin shows a koala perched in a eucalyptus tree as it gazes toward the left. The "P" mintmark for Perth is placed to the left. The legend "AUSTRALIAN KOALA" runs across the top rim. At the bottom rim, the year-date "2018" is followed by the weight and purity, "1oz 9999 SILVER." The coin measures 40.6 mm in diameter and is 2.98 mm thick.
HM Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, graces the obverse. Rim inscriptions include the Queen's name, the issuing country "AUSTRALIA," and the denomination "1 DOLLAR." The edge design is reeded.
While the Red Kangaroo receives a great deal of the attention as Australia's most famous marsupial species, the koala is not far behind! It is adored all around the world for its cute appearance, although these animals are known to be stubborn and not particularly friendly. With its limited mintage of 300,000, the 2018 1 oz Silver Koala from the Perth Mint will sell fast, so be sure to purchase yours from Gainesville Coins!
