There is perhaps no more iconic gold coin in the world than the South African Krugerrand. It is recognized around the world and has been a popular choice among bullion investors for five decades.
In 2017, the Rand Refinery (South Africa's state mint and the largest gold refining complex in the world) issued a special-edition Silver Krugerrand to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the gold coin's inaugural year. The coin was so popular that now the Silver Krugerrand has entered regular production for the first time ever in 2018!
Each coin is struck from .999 fine silver and contains 1 troy ounce of pure silver by weight. It carries a legal tender face value of 1 Rand.
The obverse of the coin shows the left-facing portrait of Paul Kruger, created by artist Otto Schultz in 1892. Kruger is considered one of the founding fathers of South Africa and is the origin of the Krugerrand's name. Inscriptions around the outer rim identify the issuing country in Afrikaans and English, "SUID-AFRIKA" and "SOUTH AFRICA." The design is enclosed by a denticle pattern and the edge is reeded.
On the reverse, Coert Steynberg's image of a springbok is used. The springbok is an antelope species native to South Africa that is known for its jumping gait and is considered a national symbol. It is flanked by the divided year-date "2018" while a distinctive African landscape appears in the background. "KRUGERRAND" appears along the top rim while the inscriptions at the bottom rim read "FYNSILWER 1 OZ FINE SILVER R1." The same denticle motif fills the outer rim.
