History was made when the F-117 Nighthawk was developed at the famously clandestine Skunk Works division of Lockheed (now known as Lockheed Martin).
As a truly stealth aircraft, the F-117 was the first of its kind.
Nighthawk Historical Background
Although the Nighthawk actually reached operational capability in 1983, the project was so secretive that its existence was not publicly revealed until 1988.
The innovative design of this aircraft is the key to its stealthiness from detection by enemy radar. It is a marvel of modern engineering, using an unusual faceted design to reduce its radar signature.
This ability to bypass radar means that the F-117 Nighthawk sacrificed a certain amount of speed and maneuverability. Remarkably, many of its early pilots -- even those with extensive flight experience -- assumed that an aircraft with such an odd shape would never be aerodynamic enough to fly!
Despite its "F" prefix, which normally indicates a fighter plane, the F-117 is strictly a bomber. Pilots of the F-117 have nicknamed themselves "Bandits," while the Nighthawks themselves are sometimes called "Goblins" due to their stealth nature.
It is perhaps best known for its highly publicized action during the 1991 Gulf War in Iraq.
The model was retired by the Air Force in 2008 after a quarter-century of service. Since being decommissioned, several F-117s now reside in museums.
Silver Round Design
You can own a piece of memorabilia honoring this groundbreaking stealth bomber with the U.S. Air Force F-117 Nighthawk Colorized Silver Coin! Struck from .999 fine silver, each coin features beautiful colorized designs on both sides.
The front side features a photo-realistic image of an F-117 high in the air above a remote mountainous terrain. The official USAF logo is placed below.
Inscriptions along the outer identify the "U.S. Air Force™" along the bottom and the Air Force's motto "AIM HIGH - FLY - FIGHT - WIN" along the top. A pattern of red, white, and blue stripes fills the rim between the two inscriptions.
A fantastic design of a bald eagle in full color graces the reverse of the round. The eagle is shown with its wings spread and its talons out, ready to strike. A banner below reads "UNITED STATES AIR FORCE" while the eagle is flanked by the military branch's logo and the Guy Harvey monogram.
Radiant light and stars surround the eagle. The technical specifications "1 OZ .999 FINE SILVER" are inscribed along the rim to the bottom-right.
