Modern coin collectors will be familiar with the Chinese Lunar series that has been issued by Australia's Perth Mint annually for the last two decades. The 2019 Year of the Pig 5 oz silver coin builds upon this legacy with another new bullion coin. Each of these coins contains five troy ounces of pure silver and bears a face value of 8 Dollars (AUD). They are all struck from .9999 fine silver.
The reverse depicts a group of pigs (four piglets and one very large adult pig) in a field of grass. A tree branch hangs overhead. The Chinese character for the Lunar sign "Pig" is placed near to the top of the design to the left. The legend "Year of the Pig" appears along the bottom rim. The edge of the coin is reeded.
On the obverse, Ian Rank-Broadley's effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II appears. The Queen faces toward the right and is encircled by inscriptions: "5 OZ 9999 Ag" is inscribed at the bottom rim along with "2019" and the denomination "8 DOLLARS," while "ELIZABETH II" and "AUSTRALIA" are found along the top rim.
While the 2019 Australia Lunar Pig 5 oz Silver Coin uses the same design as its smaller-sized counterparts, the full breadth and detail of the artwork can be better appreciated on the larger 65.6 mm coin.
