The United States Mint continues its America the Beautiful (ATB) silver bullion coin series by celebrating Block Island National Wildlife Refuge in Rhode Island.
These five-ounce silver coins have become extremely popular with collectors and bullion buyers alike. The same design appears on circulating U.S. quarters, as well.
Each coin contains 5 troy ounces of pure silver and is legal tender with a face value of 25 cents. Each 2018 5 oz Silver ATB Block Island Coin is struck from .999 fine silver and measures an impressive 76.2 mm in diameter -- and is over 4 mm thick.
The reverse depicts a heron flying above the beach at the Block Island Refuge, an area known as Cow Cove. Waves crash against the shoreline and a lighthouse is visible in the background. The outer rim includes the inscriptions "RHODE ISLAND," "BLOCK ISLAND," the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and the year-date "2018."
The edge design features incuse inscriptions for the weight and purity of the coin.
A classic portrait of George Washington facing left appears on the obverse. Either side of the bust is flanked by the traditional inscriptions "IN GOD WE TRUST" (to the right) and "LIBERTY" (to the left). The coin's denomination is indicated at the bottom rim, "QUARTER DOLLAR," while the issuing country "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" is placed at the top rim.
The Silver ATB series remains very popular with the public thanks to offering a handful of new designs each calendar year. By the completion of the series, all fifty U.S. states will have a national park featured on these coins.
