Surprisingly, it's not the American Gold Eagle, which is struck from a durable 22-karat gold alloy. The purest U.S. gold coin is the beloved Gold Buffalo! This popular series is back again with the 2019 1 oz American Gold Buffalo (.9999 Fine), available now at Gainesville Coins.
Each Gold Buffalo contains 1 troy ounce of pure gold by weight. As official U.S. legal tender issued by the mint, it bears a nominal face value of $50.
Historic Gold Buffalo Design
Both the obverse and reverse designs of this exceptional bullion coin are slightly enhanced versions of artist and sculptor James Earle Fraser's original 1913 design for the "Buffalo" nickel.
The right-facing profile of an American Indian brave appears on the obverse. His hair is pulled to the side in a braid and feathers are worn near the top of the head. This portrait by Fraser is not a single historical figure, but a composite of several different Native American chiefs. Inscriptions include the year-date "2019" placed at the bottom left, just above an incuse "F" for Fraser, and the legend "LIBERTY" along the rim to the top-right.
The reverse shows a detailed image of an American bison (buffalo) facing toward the left. Beneath its hooves at the bottom rim, the denomination "$50" is accompanied by inscriptions for the weight and purity, reading "1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD. The edge is reeded. The issuing country "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" curls along the top rim, and the national mottoes "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" are inscribed on either side of the buffalo.
Aside from being struck from 99.99% pure gold, the Gold Buffalo has been a steady favorite among collectors thanks to its nostalgic and quintessentially American design. Pick up your own 2019 1 oz American Gold Buffalo at competitive pricing today!
