For the first time ever, the Royal Canadian Mint is releasing its specialized incuse maple leaf design for a gold coin!
The 2019 1 oz Canadian Incuse Maple Leaf is a new variety in the classic Gold Maple series. It is struck from extra-pure .9999 fine gold and, like its garden-variety counterpart, contains 1 troy ounce (31.1 grams) of pure gold by weight.
Each of these 1 oz Gold Maple Leafs is Canadian legal tender with a denomination of 50 Dollars.
The reverse design uses the original Walter Ott design of a maple leaf, but with the eye-popping modification of an incuse engraving technique. This means the image is created not by the contrast of relief sculpture against the flat field (background) of the coin, but by engraving a sunken image into the field itself. The radial line finish fills the rest of the field. The purity "9999" is found on either side of the leaf, while rim inscriptions read "CANADA" along the top and "FINE GOLD 1 OZ OR PUR" along the bottom rim.
Susanna Blunt's effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right appears on the obverse. The same gorgeous radial line finish is used. Inscriptions around the outer rim include "ELIZABETH II" and "50 DOLLARS 2019."
With this niche minting technique, the RCM has created another fantastic variety within the popular Maple Leaf series. Moreover, this special new design celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Gold Maple Leaf, which was first issued in 1979. Get yours at competitive pricing at Gainesville Coins.
