Gold Philharmonic Design and Coin Highlights
Both the obverse side and reverse side of the Philharmonic were designed by artist Thomas Pesendorfer. To this day, it is considered among the most gorgeous and well-arranged designs to appear on any coin, whether ancient or modern.
The obverse shows the front facade of the grand pipe organ located in Austria's biggest music hall, the Misikverein. This is the location where the world-renowned Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra often performs. Inscriptions indicate the year-date "2022," the legal tender denomination "100 EURO," the weight and purity "1 UNZE GOLD 999.9," and the issuing nation "REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH" (Republic of Austria).
The reverse design depicts an array of different orchestral instruments, including a horn, bassoon, harp, cello, and violin. The instruments are organized in a balanced and eye-pleasing arrangement. The German inscription above reads "WIENER PHILHARMONIKER." Unlike most coins, the edge design is plain (smooth).
The diameter of the Austrian Philharmonic gold coin measures 37 mm across. Its incredibly high gold purity of .9999 fine gold—meaning 99.99% pure!—is rivaled only the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf. It is truly a noteworthy achievement of the Austrian Mint, which stands as perhaps the oldest minting facility in the world (circa 1194).
