The Gold Buffalo
Although it was originally designed in 1913, the American Buffalo, also referred to as the Gold Buffalo, was not issued by the US Mint until recently. The pure (99.99%) 24-karat
bullion coin was the first pure gold coin made available for sale by the US Mint, and it was released for public purchase on June 22, 2006, at a price of $800. Within its first year of issue, its value jumped 12.5% and it reached a selling price of $899.95, all while maintaining its value as a legal tender.
The 1 oz coin’s design is reminiscent of the old Buffalo-Indian Head nickel (1913-1934), which features a Native American’s profile on the front and an American Bison standing on a mound of dirt on the back. Due to the resurrection of this popular design and because of the American Buffalo’s rare purity, collectors and investors were eager to add the valuable
gold coin to their collections and portfolios. In the first seven months alone, 323,000 Gold Buffaloes were purchased, outselling the world’s best-selling gold bullion coin, the
Gold Eagle, that year.
The US Mint American Buffalo is the purest gold coin the US Government has ever issued and makes a great investment for those investors that prefer pure precious metals like the
Canadian Maple Leaf and are looking to add American gold to their portfolios.
All U.S. bullion coins, including the American Buffalo gold piece, are struck at the West Point Mint in New York. According to the U.S. Mint website, only the proof version of the gold buffalo coin bears the mint mark on the front of the coin, behind the neck of the Indian. Bullion versions do not have the mark. 2006 and 2007 coins were only issued in one-ounce versions, but in 2008, $5, $10, and $25 face value coins were minted in 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/2 oz gold versions.
