American Silver Eagles

All American Eagles

The American Silver Eagle coin is the flagship silver bullion coin of the United States. First struck in 1986, they have been minted annually since and are among the most widely bought and traded pure silver bullion coins in the world. Each coin is minted from .999 fine silver and is designated with a $1 face value, making it America's first 99.9% pure silver dollar, which has earned it the title: American Eagle Silver Dollar.

Because they are designated as legal tender, the weight and purity of American Eagles coins are guaranteed by the full faith and credit of the United States government. This is one of the principal reasons the Silver Eagle coin is so popular, setting yearly sales records with over 42 million sold in 2013. Along with their beautiful Walking Liberty design, the comfort of owning a government-backed coin that is IRA approved is why many buy Silver Eagle coins.

2014 Silver American Eagle coins are offered individually, or you can purchase them in bulk, whether in mint tubes of 20 coins or in the popular, mint-sealed “Monster Box.” In addition, we sell backdate American Silver Eagles from previous years.

The United States Mint produces an enormous quantity of silver bullion annually. In 2013 in particular, the U.S. Mint experienced soaring sales for the American Eagle silver bullion coin. With no mintage limit, these popular coins hit a record-breaking 42,675,000 sold as of December 26, 2013. Further, they are not the only American Silver Eagle coins seeing a boost in demand (and, consequently, sales). For the 2013-W Silver Proof Eagle, 797,882 coins have been sold with no mintage limit set. The 2013-W Uncirculated Silver American Eagle has also sold 149,328 coins. The 2014 American Silver Eagle is now available, and has been on pace to surpass last year's records!

Three Variations Of Eagle Coins

To satisfy the numismatic preferences of collectors and investors, American Eagle silver dollars are produced in multiple variations. Currently the U.S. Mint strikes the American Silver Eagle coin in three versions: Brilliant Uncirculated / Bullion, Proof, and Burnished Uncirculated.

  • American Silver Eagles Bullion

    Brilliant Uncirculated / Bullion Eagles

The most common 1 oz Silver Eagle variation is the Brilliant Uncirculated finish. These coins are sold individually, in a mint tube of 20 Silver Eagles, or in a mint-sealed “Monster Box” of twenty-five tubes for a total of 500 coins. Each coin is struck from 1 troy ounce of 99.9% pure silver, which is fully backed by the U.S. government. This is the only version of the American Silver Eagle that does not carry a mint mark, and they are not sold directly to the public by the United States Mint. You can purchase Brilliant Uncirculated Silver Eagles through Gainesville Coins, an authorized U.S. Mint bullion dealer.

  • American Silver Eagles Proofs

    Proof Eagles

The Proof Silver Eagle is struck from a specially-treated blank that is carefully cleaned and polished. The blanks are hand-fed into a printing press that uses a detailed die to strike each coin multiple times. This results in an extra-sharp image. The entire process creates a beautiful .999 fine silver bullion that features mirror-like fields and frosted details. Proof Eagles have a mint mark on the reverse, signifying their collectible status. Current-year Proof Eagles are available directly from the U.S. Mint; however, backdates can be purchased from Gainesville Coins.

  • American Silver Eagles Uncirculated

    Burnished Eagles

The collectors' edition Burnished Uncirculated Silver Eagle is made using the same process as the Proof version, except a burnished pure silver blank is used to create a satin-like field behind the frosted features rather than a mirrored effect. The Mint began adding Burnished Uncirculated Eagles to the series in 2006.

    American Silver Eagles Mint Mark

Like the Proof, the burnished silver coin is struck with a mint mark on its reverse, and is made expressly for collectors. Nonetheless it still contains 1 troy oz of .999 fine silver. Only current-year versions are available through the U.S. Mint. Luckily, you can buy Silver American Eagle coins with a burnished finish in a previous year from Gainesville Coins.

Obverse American Silver Eagle

The obverse (front) brings the famous 1916 “Walking Liberty” design of A.A. Weinman into the modern era. In this design, Lady Liberty strides towards the rising sun of a new day, blessing the land before her. Wrapped in the American flag, she carries a bough of oak and one of laurel, signifying the triumphs of the United States in both war and civil endeavors. The legend “LIBERTY” arches above the scene, while the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is inscribed to the right. The year-date of the coin appears near the bottom rim, under Liberty's sandals.

Reverse American Silver Eagle

The reverse (back)of the coin features the design of John Mercanti, 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint. Based on the Great Seal of the United States, the design shows an American Bald Eagle in heraldic pose, the Union Shield on its breast. It clutches an olive branch in its right talon, and six arrows in its left, signifying preparedness for either peace or war. The ribbon it holds in its beak bears the national motto of the United States: “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (Out Of Many, One.) The thirteen stars arranged in an inverted triangle above the eagle's head represent the original founding 13 colonies. Along the top of the rim, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” is struck, with the weight and denomination of the coin, “1 oz FINE SILVER ~ ONE DOLLAR,” along the bottom rim.
