The Perth Mint produces one of the world’s most popular coin series: the Chinese Zodiac Lunar Series. The Perth Mint manufactures other prominent gold products, but its Lunar series is among the most popular because of its yearly design change.
The Perth Mint was established in 1899 as a branch of Great Britain's Royal Mint, to process the mountains of gold coming out of western australia. the australian gold, which was mined from the coolgardie and kalgoorlie goldfields, were manufactured into bars and gold sovereigns. The perth mint produced over 100 million intricately-struck gold sovereigns for circulation between 1899 and 1931. It’s no small wonder that the perth mint is still making alluring gold coins and remains unquestioned about its high quality gold.
Two of the most popular gold coins the Perth Mint produces are the gold Nugget/Kangaroo series which and the gold Lunar series. The gold Nugget/Kangaroo series began in 1986, while the Lunar series began ten years later in 1996. The Nugget/Kangaroo is named so because of its transition from a gold nugget to a gold kangaroo design. Originally, the Gold Nugget featured only an embossment of a gold nugget, but in 1989, the design was transformed into a Red Kangaroo surrounded by rays of light. Perhaps the design was changed to provide a more dynamic picture. The Lunar series became popular because of its accordance with the yearly change in the Chinese Zodiac.
The 2015 Gold Kangaroos are exceptional because of the modification that the design has undergone. The 2015 Kangaroo is set bounding across the moonlit outback. Earlier Kangaroo designs are of a Red Kangaroo surrounded by rays of light. The 2015 Kangaroo is available in 1 ounce, 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce and 1 ounce weights and will feature the contemporary kangaroo design. The 1kg Gold Kangaroo will feature the original Stuart Devlin design of a Red Kangaroo framed by rays of light.
The 2015 Gold Lunar coins honor the year of the goat, with a majestic ram on a mountaintop, surveying his realm. the lunar calendar has great significance in determining auspicious dates and times to perform important rituals. for example, it could help determine a lucky day for a wedding or the start of a new enterprise.
The Year of the Goat series is available in sizes ranging from 1/20 ounce, 1 ounce, 1/4 ounce, 1/2 ounce, a 1 ounce coins (limited to 30,000), 2 ounce, 10 ounce, and 1 kilo (32.15 ounces) coins.
The Perth Mint offers bullion, proof and colorized versions of both these coins, as well as numerous other gold proof and collectible coins.
