The Common Date 20 Franc French Gold Angel Coins (.1867 oz) Coin, minted between 1871 and 1898, is believed to bring luck to those who carry it. Commonly given as a gift, the coin's good fortune was first experienced by its designer, Augustin Dupre when he narrowly escaped the guillotine. It is said that Dupre bribed a guard with the coin, which he carried in his pocket.
On the obverse of the coin the guardian angel Genius is featured inscribing the French Constitution. On either side a fasces and a rooster are pictured, symbolizing strength in unity, and the fighting spirit of the Republic. Written above the angel along the upper edge of the coin is "REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE," and at the bottom; Dupre's signature.
On the reverse of the coin the laurel wreath symbolizing peace and achievement encircles the coin's denomination, "20 FRANCS" and the year. Along the outside of the wreath "LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE" is inscribed.
