Details & Specifications

The 2018 Royal Canadian Mint 1/2 oz Gold Maple Leaf continues the proud tradition of the world’s most popular family of ‘four nines’ .9999 fine gold coins. Made from one-half troy ounce of 99.99% pure gold, the 2018 1/2 oz Gold Maple Leaf is a popular way to grow your gold portfolio. Canadian 1/2 oz Gold Maple Leafs make it easier to make regular gold purchases without straining your budget.

This year’s 1/2 oz Gold Maple Leaf coin features the “radial design” security measure introduced on the series in 2015. This design is robotically cut into the dies for the coin at a special angle in a fineness measured in microns. This exacting engraving process produces a light-diffracting appearance on the surface of the coin when it is tilted - something that counterfeiters cannot accomplish.

The Design of the 2018 1/2 oz Gold Maple Leaf Coin

The obverse of the 1/2 oz 2018 Gold Maple Leaf features the Susanna Blunt portrait of Elizabeth II in her role as Queen of Canada. This effigy of the Queen has appeared on Canadian Gold Maple Leafs since 2004. The Queen’s name arches along the rim of the coin above her image. Below, the denomination 20 DOLLARS and year date 2018 flow along the rim.

The reverse of the coin features Walter Ott’s timeless rendition of Canada’s most recognized symbol - the maple leaf. This design debuted on the very first Gold Maple Leaf coin in 1979. The leaf is flanked by the purity of the coin in numeric form, 9999. Above the leaf is the inscription CANADA. Running along the bottom rim is the coin’s weight in English and French FINE GOLD 1/2 OZ OR PUR.

The coin features the traditional serrated/reeded edge, first used centuries ago to discourage the illegal practice of filing down a coin’s rim, then passing it off at full value.
