The flagship coin of the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) is the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf. It was the mint's first official foray into the international markets in 1979, and has remained one of the world's most popular gold bullion coins ever since. This is due in no small part to the coin's world-class security features and its extra-pure .9999 fine gold. Like its predecessors, each of the 2018 1/2 oz Canadian Gold Maples contains a total of one-half troy ounce (0.5 troy oz) of fine gold content. Each coin has a face value of 20 Dollars.
On the reverse, the design is dominated by the lifelike maple leaf engraving created specifically for the RCM by artist Walter Ott. There is a smaller maple leaf privy that is micro-engraved to the bottom-right of the design. The purity "9999" is found on either side of the main maple leaf, with inscriptions along the bottom rim reading "FINE GOLD 1/2 OZ OR PUR." The edge is reeded.
The obverse shows Queen Elizabeth II facing right, the work of another mint artist, Susanna Blunt. An eye-catching radial line finish fills the field behind Her Majesty, creating a light-diffusion effect. The top rim includes the inscription "ELIZABETH II" while the bottom rim features the denomination "20 DOLLARS" and the year of issue "2018."
For nearly four decades, the Gold Maple has held a prominent position in the silver bullion market. It's popular not only in North America but can be found in the bullion trade all over the world.
