The historic Morro Castle located in Havana Bay is visible in the backdrop to the left, while the "old man" Santiago attempts to reel in a giant blue marlin leaping from the water in the foreground. The boat shown actually resembles Hemingway's own vessel known as Pilar. The Guy Harvey signature appears to the right of the scene, while the outer rim is inscribed with "Guy Harvey© Established 1986" and "THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA."

Another fantastic work by Guy Harvey graces the reverse of the round. Known as "Spanish Galleon," the image shows a sunken treasure ship surrounded by an array of sea creatures.
