There is perhaps no bullion coin series in the world that is more well-known than the American Gold Eagle. This popular gold bullion coin comes in a variety of sizes, like the 2019 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle, which boasts one-half troy ounce (0.5 troy oz) of actual gold weight (AGW). Each coin is struck from .917 fine gold and carries a face value of $25 as legal tender.
The image of Lady Liberty found on the obverse design was actually created by the famous American artist Augustus Saint-Gaudens for $20 gold coins known as Double Eagles in 1907. His incredible depiction of Lady Liberty is unlike nearly all previous portrayals. She stands atop a cliff that overlooks the U.S. Capitol, holding an olive branch and a lit torch. The legend "LIBERTY" is inscribed along the top rim, while the year-date "2019" appears in the field to the right. Fifty stars circle around the outer rim.
Miley Busiek's family of eagles design graces the reverse. A mother eagle cares for her eaglets in a nest as her mate returns carrying an olive branch. The issuing country "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" curls along the top rim. On either side of the nest, the mottoes "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" are inscribed. The bottom rim contains the inscriptions "1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD~25 DOLLARS," indicating the weight and denomination. The edge of the coin uses a reeded design.
One of the main advantages of the Gold Eagle coin is that it contains one troy ounce of pure gold but still bears legal tender status. It's not only bullion, but it also carries the guarantee of the full faith and credit of the U.S. government. Buy the 2019 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle for competitive pricing at Gainesville Coins!
