2021 is the most important year for the American Gold Eagle since it's introduction in 1986. The original Miley Busiek "Family of Eagles" reverse will be replaced mid-year by Jennie Norris' "Eagle Head" design.

The 2021 1 oz American Gold Eagle is the flagship coin of the program, and demand is expected to be high for this last mintage of the original design. Demand is expected to be at least as high for the 2021 Gold Eagles with the new reverse, which will permanently replace the original design in mid-2021.

The new reverse for the American Gold Eagles was designed by Jennie Norris. She drew upon her experiences as a raptor handler to convey the intensity of a "face to face" encounter with an American Bald Eagle. The new reverse will appear as the new standard design on all sizes of American Gold Eagle coins from mid-2021 onward.

At the same time, the US Mint will introduce a remastered version of the obverse. Originally used on the 1907-1932 $20 Double Eagle circulating gold coin, the "Striding Liberty" design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens is widely considered the most beautiful US coin design. Taking advantage of modern technology, the new master hubs will produce a sharper, more detailed version of Saint-Gaudens' famous design.

2021 marks the first "transition year" for America's premier bullion coin program. Both the old and new reverse designs will be minted with a 2021 date. This is an historic event for the American Gold Eagle, which will see strong collector demand on top of multi-year highs in investment demand. Both types of precious metals buyers are expected to want one of each design to mark the occasion.

The US Mint has not revealed the exact date that mintage of the original 2021 1oz American Gold Eagle design will permanently end. We only know "mid-2021." Be sure to order yours today, so that you aren't left scrambling on the secondary market later!
