2021 is an important year for gold coin collectors. The American Gold Eagle is getting its first design change since it was introduced in 1986. A new "Eagle Head" reverse replaces "Family of Eagles" design by Miley Busiek in mid-2021.
The 2021 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle bullion coin is one of the coins getting the make-over. The new reverse, by artist Jennie Norris, is a close-up of the head of an American Bald Eagle. Norris drew upon her experience of seeing eagles face-to-face as a volunteer raptor handler for inspiration.
The new reverse will not appear on American Gold Eagle coins until the middle of the year. In the meantime, this 2021 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle bullion coin will retain its original design.
At the same time the US Mint launches the new reverse design for the AGE, it will introduce a remastered obverse. The design itself will remain the famous 1907 Saint-Gaudens double eagle obverse.
Advances in technology have allowed the Mint to add fine detail to remastered hubs to better reflect Saint-Gaudens' vision.
The original design 1/4 oz 2021 American Gold Eagle bullion coin will be minted for less than a year. Collector interest is expected to be strong for all sizes of 2021 American Gold Eagles. This will be in addition to high levels of investor interest for all sizes of Gold Eagles.
