Buy $20 Saint Gaudens Gold Double Eagle (Very Fine) Varied Year

The Augustus Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle was the second and last design for America's only circulating $20 gold coin. Considered by many to be the most visually stunning U.S. coin ever made, these gold bullion coins are purchased not only for their gold content, but also for their historic and numismatic value.

Gainesville Coins offers raw Random Date Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle $20 Gold Coins in VF (Very Fine) condition at very competitive prices. These 90% pure (.900 fine) bullion coins have 0.9675 troy ounce of fine gold content by weight.

While the appeal of a large gold coin is self-explanatory, these double eagles are also coveted today due to their fantastic design and artistic innovation.

The Birth of a Legendary Coin

This coin owes its existence to President Theodore Roosevelt's campaign to beautify American coinage. He contacted famous sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign the double eagle, the largest circulating gold coin of the United States, and supported him in his fights with the U.S. Mint to realize the design.

A number of major functional flaws -- the lack of a raised rim, the excessively high relief -- were unresolved at the time that Saint-Gaudens died in 1907. Chief Engraver Charles Barber was tasked with modifying the coin in order to make it compatible with mass production.

While the use of an outside artist like Augustus Saint-Gaudens was controversial, and undoubtedly angered longtime mint officials, modern observers can scarcely argue with the results: Perhaps the most beautiful American coin ever known was born.

Coin Design

The obverse shows Lady Liberty striding confidently towards the viewer, the Torch of Liberty and the Olive branch of Peace in her hands. Behind her, the rays of a new day brighten the sky, with the U.S. Capitol in the distance. "LIBERTY" is inscribed across the top rim while the year-date is placed in the bottom-right corner.

The reverse features an American Bald Eagle flying high over the rising sun, with the legend "United States Of America" and the face value "Twenty Dollars" inscribed above. The coin measures 34 mm across and 2.4 mm thick.

These coins have not been professionally graded, but they have been sorted by eye by our in-house numismatic experts into qualitative grade categories - in this case, Very Fine (VF). Dates received will be random, chosen by us from available inventory.
