This coin owes its existence to President Theodore Roosevelt's campaign to beautify American coinage. He contacted famous sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign the double eagle, the largest circulating gold coin of the United States, and supported him in his fights with the U.S. Mint to realize the design.
The obverse shows Lady Liberty striding confidently towards the viewer, the Torch of Liberty and the Olive branch of Peace in her hands. Behind her, the rays of a new day brighten the sky, with the U.S. Capitol in the distance. The reverse features an American Bald Eagle flying high over the rising sun, with the legend "United States Of America Twenty Dollars" above.
