The $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle is often cited as one of the most beautiful US coins ever minted. The $20 Saint-Gaudens was struck from .900 gold and contains 0.9675 troy oz of pure gold. Minted between 1907 and 1933 the Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle represents the pinnacle of pre-1933 US gold coins.
Acclaimed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens was tasked with redesigning the Double Eagle and the obverse of the coin features his depiction of a striding Liberty figure holding a torch of enlightenment and olive branch of peace in her hands. Behind Liberty the dawning sun's rays illuminate the United States Capitol building. The 46 stars around the rim represent the 46 states that made up the USA in 1907 and “LIBERTY” and the date are inscribed at the top and lower right respectively. The reverse is filled by Saint-Gaudens' flying eagle with rising sun background. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA TWENTY DOLLARS” is inscribed at the top and Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagles minted after 1908 have the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” inscribed at the bottom. “E PLURIBUS UNUM” is written around the edge of all St. Gaudens Double Eagles.
