US Mint Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht's redesign of the 1838 the $10 Liberty Gold Eagle was among the most popular US gold coins produced until its final minting in 1907. Also known as the Liberty Head, the Liberty Gold Eagle was struck from .900 gold and each coin contains .48375 oz of pure gold.

The obverse is dominated by Gobrecht's portrait of Liberty in a coronet that itself was based upon a portrait of Venus. “LIBERTY” is written upon the coronet and the mint year is below Liberty herself, with 13 stars representing the 13 original colonies around the rim. The reverse features a majestic bald eagle with wings splayed holding arrows and olive branches in its talons. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA - TWENTY D” circles around it and Liberty Gold Eagles minted post-1866 also feature the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST”.
